SERMON NOTES

Acts 2:17 NIV

17 “ ‘In the last days, God says,I will pour out my Spirit on all people.Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

Genesis 1:27-28 NIV

27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

Genesis 2:18 NIV

18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

ezer – helper
kenegdo – suitable, fit, corresponding

Genesis 2:23 NIV

23 The man said,“This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’for she was taken out of man.”

ish/ishah – man/woman
“she shall be called like me because she came from me.”

Genesis 3:15 NIV

15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

Genesis 3:16 NIV

16 To the woman he said,“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children.Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

Genesis 1 + 2 teach that God created male and female to be equal in being and in function.

Genesis 3 describes their relationship after their fall into sin as dominating and hierarchical.

God promised to raise up one from Eve’s offspring who would destroy the results of sin and bring forth a new creation.

Within a fallen, male dominated world, the Old Testament records exceptions to the “rule” such as: Miriam, Deborah and Huldah.

Luke 10:38-39 NIV
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.

Luke 10:42 NIV

42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Acts 2:17-18 NIV

17 “ ‘In the last days, God says,I will pour out my Spirit on all people.Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women,I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

The New Creation begins to reverse the curse of sin and empowers men and women to become equal partners, functioning together on mission, as God originally intended.

Romans 16:1-2 NIV
I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon, of the church in Cenchreae. I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.

Romans 16:3-4, 7 NIV

3 Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. 4 They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them.
7 Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow Jews who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was.

2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

Galatians 3:28 NIV

28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
